Tasting Notes
Aromas of dark cherry, red currant and earth. A classic, light bodied, cool climate pinot noir with notes of tart red fruit and vanilla on the palate. This pinot also has pleasant tannins and a long finish.
The Producer
Westcott Vineyards and Winery is a small, artisanal winery focused on hand-crafted chardonnay and pinot noir wines.
Having enjoyed global careers in banking and tech, Grant Westcott and Carolyn Hurst knew they weren’t the ‘retiring’ kind. With Carolyn being a native of the Niagara region and a passionate oenophile, and Grant being a former cattle farmer in his younger years and no stranger to working the land, purchasing and running a vineyard seemed like the perfect way for the couple to combine their passions and finally bet on themselves.
Vinification
The spring and summer of 2017 saw significant rainfall, especially through July and August. Hail also presented a problem for wineries on the Beamsville bench. However, September was a very pleasant month with unusually warm, dry days that continued into October. Given the late season warm temperatures, ripening of grapes continued well into October with some processing occurring in November. Overall, 2017 was a good vintage for wineries in Niagara. The early weather problems did slow the growing process at the start of the season, however, ideal temperatures and conditions later towards harvest quickly brought the grapes to ideal ripeness. Expect the 2017 vintage to display a cool climate style wine with fresh acidity and bright fruit. Fermented with selected yeast. 21 days maceration on skins.Oak Treatment: 23 months aged, 100% French Oak. 15% new
