Tasting Notes
An intensely aromatic and herbaceous Cabernet Franc with a racy acidity and fine tannins. It has lovely floral aromas as well as aromas of redcurrants, tomato leaf and black pepper, the palate is classically structured with great lift to the fruit.
The Producer
As a teenager, Jocelyn had set her sights on being a botanist, but also was a talented tennis player and ended up in California for a period. After realising that perhaps tennis wasn’t to be her chosen career, Jocelyn returned to the Cape and studied viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University. In 2013, Jocelyn set up Hogan wines.
Their winemaking approach, is to keep things as simple and natural as possible and to create nuanced, elegant wines with a sense of place. Each bottle of wine should be a history lesson of what the vine has experienced during the year of its vintage, its unique story.
Vinification
The Cabernet Franc grapes are sourced from 11-year-old, trellised vines from the lower Helderberg on granitic soils. The vineyard is 2km from the coast. The maritime effect is most favourable, especially in the hot February-March months in Stellenbosch. Spontaneous fermentation took place in open top fermenters with very soft handling during fermentation, only two punch downs per day.
The wine was matured in 225L older French oak barrels.
