Tasting Notes

Smooth, juicy Primitivo (called Zinfandel in the USA) is full of Southern Puglian character. The vineyards are based in Salento where the grapes can achieve early and full ripeness. With a medium body, ripe, sun-blushed fruit, a touch of spice and a soft velvety texture.

The Producer

The Rosso IGT Puglia Vino Appassimento Gold Release from Ca’Vittoria is a 60% Negroamaro, 25% Merlot, 15% Primitivo blend of grapes grown and harvested in the Salento area of Puglia, with picking occurring as late as October. This gives a high level of sugar and high alcohol, required for the appassimento method.

Vinification

Ripe grapes mature on the vine for about 15 days, during which period 50% of their weight and moisture is lost. After a rigorous hand harvest, the grapes are pressed and the fermentation starts; the skins are left in the must for a long period to extract flavours and the characteristic ruby red colour. The wine is then left in oak for around 3-4 months.
