The Story
In 1839, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert started building a fine homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines in 1847.
The vines came from the Macarthur vineyards at Camden Park in New South Wales and from the collection of English glasshouse cuttings from the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at Chiswick.
Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered.
A hidden utopia, the family started to reinvigorate Pewsey Vale Vineyard in 1961. The focus fell sharply on the beauty and diversity of Riesling in its many forms. One vineyard. One variety. One vision. This vision has seen Pewsey Vale Vineyard create the most awarded and beloved Rieslings in Australia.
In 1961, landowner and pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons realised he owned the site of the regions earliest vineyard and started to re-establish the Pewsey Vale Vineyard.
Louisa Rose, multi-award winning winemaker, wine judge and a cool climate enthusiast, has been making Pewsey Vale Vineyard wines since 1996. She is a firm believer in the philosophy that ‘wine is made in the vineyard’.
“Often winemakers have to blend across different vineyards to make complete and balanced wines, but this is not the case with Pewsey Vale. The relationship between Riesling and the unique, undulating site along with single varietal dedication, provides depth, diversity and dimension.”
