The Producer
Miguel Arroyo has founded the winery 15 years ago, starting with the vineyards of his family. He is the fourth generation of winemakers in his family. He keeps and still cultivates these old vineyards but he also planted more Verdejo and he built a new winery, with the best facilities to elaborate high quality, serious Verdejo wines with aging potential. Miguel Arroyo owns around 106 acres of Verdejo in Segovia, the most southeastern area in Rueda and the highest in elevation (2,800 ft). Within the vineyards there are different soils, which, depending on their typicity, set the guidelines for working the grapes differently, using an independent protocol for each must. River gravels merged in the sandy soils, dropped when Duero used to pass through this area. The soil is so poor and sandy that this area was able to resist phylloxera. So some old vines are ungrafted. Miguel has selected and planted the oldest and original clone of Verdejo. Organic cultivated, the verdejo is gobelet pruning and hand harvested. All viticulture is done by hand. Winemaking is driven to show the potential of this glorious verdejo. Native yeast, low temperatures for fermentation, contact with lees, barrel fermenting. Miguel claims for the aging potential of his Verdejo and proves with his wines.
