Tasting Notes

Bold flinty nose and bright gooseberry and citric fruit palate; really zesty, refreshing and satisfying. Finishes with a pleasant chalky, leafy note.

The Producer

The Domaine des Echardières, spanning 16 hectares, is located on the left bank of the river Cher in close proximity to the famous Chenonceaux renaissance château. The property was acquired as a going concern by owner Luc Poullain in 2000, at the age of 30, shortly after returning from studying agricultural engineering in England and selling chemicals to wine growers. Poullain now serves as president of the recently established Touraine Chenonceaux appellation for red and white wines.

The vineyards are split nearly equally between cabernet franc, gamay, and malbec (known as côt in this region) for the reds, and sauvignon blanc for the whites. The domaine produces wines under the new appellation as well as the wider Touraine AC. The soils are diverse, but limestone with flint is a common theme. The slopes are well-oriented, and the sauvignon blanc is grown exclusively on flinty, chalky clays, lending the wines an additional aromatic dimension and minerality.

The sites chosen for the reds must be exceptional, providing the desired regularity of conditions for malbec to ripen properly. The valley of the Cher, with its slightly warmer microclimate, is one such area.

Luc Poullain follows a philosophy of sustainability, operating within the environmentally-friendly guidelines of the Terravitis movement. He balances traditional methods with modern practices such as thermo-regulated stainless-steel vats, achieving a harmonious combination of tradition and innovation.
