Tasting Notes

This gorgeous Chardonnay displays straw with shimmering gold highlights. The wine coats the glass when swirled and rolls about the bowl with a silky, satin texture. The nose bears tropical notes with a full profile of ripe ruby red grapefruit, white peach and a dash of apricot. The French oak stands dutifully in the background allowing the fruit to elevate to perfection. On the palate there is a distinct richness that makes the fruit and oak balance become even more evident. The lush qualities of this wine envision many excellent pairings with a variety of cuisines. This Chardonnay can be enjoyed now, but will have a long and gracious life in the bottle.

The Producer

Founded by brothers Georges and Daniel Daou in 2009, DAOU Family Estates was created with the vision to make California “first growth” wine. Located in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, DAOU Mountain provides the terroir to achieve this. Standing 2,200 feet above sea level, on calcareous clay soils that evoke Bordeaux’s Right Bank, the altitude supports the soils, providing the perfect terroir for the production of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate was named a “jewel of ecological elements” by the father of modern American winemaking, André Tchelistcheff. The winemaking vision of DAOU Family Estates, falls under Daniel’s meticulous guidance, he is relentless in his pursuit of absolute fruit purity, implementing an array of proprietary techniques and technologies to create one of the most rigorously innovative winemaking programs in the world. This obsessive approach has not gone unnoticed – DAOU Family Estates was recently nominated for Wine Enthusiast’s American Winery of the Year.

Vinification

The year 2019 produced possibly the greatest vintage DAOU Mountain has ever experienced. Heavy rains during dormancy, combined with moderate temperatures and extended hang time, yielded the latest harvest we have seen to date. The ample winter rainfall—close to 40 inches total—gave way to a healthy cover crop that replenished the soil’s micronutrient levels. The climate throughout the growing season was perfect, with temperatures mostly in the 80s and 90s, and not a single day reaching 100 degrees during the entire year. The harvested grapes arrived in exquisite condition— showing no damage, sunburn or shrivelling. The resulting wines are marked by elegance and power, with moderate alcohols and great acidity that promise excellent longevity
